Celebrate Summer on the Shores of the Mighty Missouri
Held the first weekend in June at American Creek Park in Chamberlain, South Dakota, American Island Days is a vibrant celebration of community, history, and summertime fun along the Missouri River. This annual event brings together families, travelers, and locals to enjoy live music, classic car and motorcycle shows, delicious food vendors, games, and riverside relaxation.
American Island, once a prominent natural island in the Missouri River near Chamberlain, served as a vital hub for river travelers and traders in the 1800s. It was known for its lush landscape, strategic location, and historical significance to Native American tribes, early settlers, and steamboat navigation. Though the island no longer exists due to changes in the river’s course and the construction of the Fort Randall and Big Bend Dams, the legacy of American Island lives on in this joyful community festival.
American Island Days was created to honor the spirit of the island—a place where people gathered, stories were shared, and culture was celebrated. Today, we keep that tradition alive by bringing the community together in the very place where the island once stood proudly across from what is now American Creek Campground and Marina.
